Celebrations are in the air as the first volunteer cadets to have joined North Wales Police graduated from the force having completed the two year programme.

Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom, Deputy Chief Constable Clive Wolfendale along with Divisional Commanders and Police Authority Member Alan Lewis joined proud parents and relatives alike to celebrate the success of the Cadets and all they have achieved.

The teenagers have much to be proud of. In the relatively short time they have spent with the force each has gained a wealth of experiences and received a variety of training.

"I am extremely proud of what the Cadets have achieved by taking part in the programme," said Sgt Melanie Brace, who is the Volunteer Cadet Sergeant. "During the last two years they have made new friends, shared new experiences and discovered new talents that will hold them in good stead for their future careers."

"They have been involved with a variety of community events and initiatives including the Eisteddfod, 999 days, Remembrance Day Parades and Road Safety Initiatives. Many have also taken part in the Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award which involved a three day exhibition and resulted in a visit from HRH Prince Edward."

At the recent ceremony, each of the Cadets received a certificate of service from the Chief Constable. Divisional Commanders also awarded certificates to the Cadets who demonstrated outstanding performance.

For many however, the graduation ceremony did not mark the end of their contact with North Wales Police. Some of the Cadets are preparing to apply to become police officers this year and in September, eight Cadets will be starting on a foundation degree course in police studies at Coleg Llandrillo. The course will see them step into a uniform yet again but this time it will be that of a Special. One of the Cadets from the Western area who received the Divisional Commanders Award is due to start training as a PCSO this month (June).

Sgt Brace added: "Some of the Cadets will also be continuing with their volunteer services by assisting with the delivery of the next Cadets programme which is due to start in September 2009. It is anticipated that 160 Cadets will take part."

The Cadets were not the only ones to be recognised for their commitment and hard work over the previous years. Chief Constable Richard Brunstrom informed Sgt Mel Brace that she is to be commended with a Chief Constables Commendation.

"In 2006 I was appointed by Chief Officers to deliver their vision of a Volunteer Cadet Scheme that would harness the skills and enthusiasm of young people," added Sgt Brace. "Following extensive research and consultation I developed and advertised the two year programme and the interest was overwhelming."

The Scheme aims to teach good citizenship, develop new skills and provide an insight into a Police related career. I am really proud of the scheme and hope that many more will benefit from it in future. It has been a huge success."
