Nearly 1400 guests joined Ambassador Reeker at the United States Embassy in Skopje to commemorate the American Independence Day. This Fourth of July was the 234th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Americans honor the Declaration for the human values that it describes and defends -- Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness. Americans see these values as universal -belonging not just to American citizens but all citizens of the world.
In addition to celebrating the Independence Day holiday, the event also marked the first anniversary of the new Embassy. The large audience of guests - including the President, the Prime Minister, Macedonian government Ministers and representatives of other embassies in Skopje - braved the stormy weather to show their support for the red, white and blue. The rain gave guests a good reason to visit the inside of the Embassy where they were delighted to view a slide show on the 4th of July in America, as well as informational posters lining the Atrium that focused on the significance of the American holiday and highlighted American multiculturalism and inclusiveness.
With the American Flag flying above the stage and the flags of the fifty states waving in the distance, The U.S. National Anthem was performed by the Military Orchestra of the Army of the Republic of Macedonia and their rousing music offered the perfect backdrop to the reception. As the rain cleared, Ambassador Reeker took a moment to acknowledge one group of extraordinary talent: the men and women of our armed forces, both the United States Military and the Army of the Republic of Macedonia who overcome fear and danger in other lands, to help make all our futures secure.
Ambassador Reeker also highlighted the U.S. commitment to Macedonia through one billion dollars of assistance programs and celebrated the strength of the ties between our two countries. The U.S. Embassy Skopje is honored to have celebrated our country's birthday in the wonderful nation of the Republic of Macedonia.
