Nope, it's not some shadowy surveillance program. It's the new Satellite FireWire Recording System from Mackie, and it totally enables you to monitor (and, yes, record) right there at home. (If you look closely you can see two--count em, two!--headphone jacks.)
Of course, the Satellite also enables monitoring and recording far away from home, for those so inclined. How, you ask? The box packages two of Mackie's Onyx mic pres as a portable unit (Mackie calls it a "Pod") that slips right into its own docking station. This set-up allows location recordists to grab the Satellite for use as a laptop front end (powered via Firewire bus), then jack back in when they return to the studio--all without groping around behind the rack for 1/4" plugs.
And in another cool twist, the monitor/control room section of the base station can also give you volume control over either the stereo "A/B" outputs, or all six line outputs, making it very handy for those doing surround-sound production. Gearwire approves.
