at 2:18 on Carl really shows how hes under the influence. great vid to actaully see the craziness of the beach boys person life at the time. very rare vid!!! .. I'M just as fascinated with the BB's crazy excessive life style as i am with their music this is the first vid Ive ever seen of them around a period of dark times for the BB.. people go on and on about bands like motley crue, van halen , ozzy, led zep. and so on but the BB WOULD have gave any of them a run for their money backstage!

I'd heard about this tour, and finally get to see footage. Carl looks TERRIBLE here. I know he was drunk but he looks really heavy here. Carl was usually a heavy-ish guy, but look at him 3 years later when he got his act together...a world's difference. Looks real bloated in his face, from the booze.

Alcohol is a great catalyst.

@christianphi Pretty tough to go out and do 150 to 200 concerts per year, through all of their darkest hours and even show up...much less sound good. As someone else said....people had paid to see them and they didn't want to cancel. They were professionals. Carl did get himself together and became himself again on stage. RIP Carl.

@Verniegirl9 yes
They never hid behind dark glasses, nor hid themselves away as self-important untouchables, nor surrounded themselves with protection from fans. Even through their darkest days they still sang through their demons, always remaining accessible to their fans, and were not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves.
All of this just adds an extra dimension to their music which sets them apart from their peers.
In inspiring later generations (like mine) their vulnerabilities are their strength.

The BBs were going through a difficult patch during this tour. Carl, in particular, was having a hard time of it. His long marriage to Annie Wilson (nee Hinsche) was disintegrating and he was abusing drugs and alcohol. Usually the consummate performer, it is widely known that during several of these Aussie appearances, he was inebriated to varying degrees. Luckily for all, he got it all together and pulled himself up out of the trouble he was in. Great man, unmatched voice, still deeply missed.
