Canonical is showing the Freescale i.MX51 Pegatron Laptop reference design running the latest version of Ubuntu Netbook Edition optimized for ARM for speed (could they be calling this the Ubuntu Smartbook Edition?). In this video, the representative of Canonical explains some of the things that are being worked on to optimize Linux as a full laptop experience on ARM platforms like the ARM Cortex A8 and the multi-core ARM Cortex A9 that are coming out soon. I will film another video with Canonical to try to get more details on how the upcoming ARM Powered laptops are going to look like and how Linux is being optimized for it.

  • Wow! That thing looks so amazing! It looks _incredibly_ light the way he just moves it around.

Perhaps this is what will (help to) get people over on Linux? $199 ~1 kg laptops?

What about graphics acceleration? It looks like it has 2D, but not 3D right? Will this (3D acceleration) be available on the A9 Cortex CPU's?

  • @malkdk It has 3D but on i.MX51 it's faster to disable 3D in the Ubuntu UIs, it's an issue about 3D drivers optimization in Ubuntu or something like that. 3D will be faster on i:MX53 and on ARM Cortex A9 processors that are coming out. 3D on ARM laptops is decent, it can do full speed OpenGL games like Quake3 for example.

  • I´m not sure about those ARMs. Can they run every single application that runs in Ubuntu??

Because if that thing loads a regular version of my fully loaded Firefox, including addons, no fans (and totally cool?), I know what my next laptop is...

    Could you clarify the compatibility??

    Thx man.

  • @1650million Many of the apps, I am not sure the number, but I think over 5000 or 12 thousand or something of the Ubuntu apps work on ARM platforms just as well. But I think the new Linaro project is meant to optimize all that and make sure all the apps work fast. Sure Firefox with all add ons and Google Chrome is being made to work perfect on this.

  • Where can I download it? And is it possible to install it normally from USB stick? I have this exact netbook model.

  • This beats the Macbook Air by a longshot if the thin factor floats your boat. Ubuntu > Mac.

  • can someone give me a link or somewhere to buy this notebook need linux!!!!

  • 2:53 the best part...haha

  • where can i buy this?

  • Ubuntu is just best!

  • arm smartbook with windows button? LOL

  • @Playerchess77 I know right! someone who actually understands what's they're presenting.

  • When will be available on market?

  • I think they are going in the wrong direction. Arm=Cheep cheep cheep you can already get an arm smart book for 40 bucks running windows CE (china). The market is changing, yes your smart book cant run much, but if you get one for 20 bucks who cares.Otherwise buy a netbook or even better a laptop.
