A quick overview of the John Deere SST16 (SPPED STEER) Lawn Tractor. This is a good tractor if you operate a lanscaping business.

  • mine has a surge and will die if I don't pull the choke out sometimes. I noticed the hoses to the fuel pump are hard as rock. Since these pumps run off vacuum, could the vacuum hose be leaking? it does it when it is warm, runs ok cold.

  • @msta999 i would clean the carb and replace those fuel lines first

  • @donyboy73 I replaced the pump, hoses and cleaned the carb bowl. It is still surging. I did notice the fuel filter never fills with fuel, looks like none is in it. I removed the fuel pump and put some vacuum to the air port and the filter started filling. Could it be it is just not getting enough pressure from the engine?.. only guessing here. But I am assuming the filter should show gas in it. If you pull the coke out 3/4 way out, the surging stops.

  • @msta999 make sure the impulse line is on tight

  • Great videos! Do you ever work on zero turn radius mowers? What about V-Twin engines like the Vanguard Big Blocks? What about Kawasaki engines? I have a 31 hp Kawasaki FX850V twin cylinder on my Hustler Super Z ztr mower. Have you ever worked on this engine before?

    You Sir, Are THE Man!!!!

  • @231MasseyFerguson i've ner worked on ur engine but i have on kawasaki fh540 and twin briggs

  • The SST didn't last long about 3 years and it was discontinued. The ZTR mowers pretty much replaced this unit. It was innovative and won awards but didn't sell very well in the long run. Still it is a John Deere and that ain't bad.

  • @msta999 I got it!!!!!!!!!!! It was the same problem you had. This time I pulled out the switch and watched it when I turned the key on and nothing was happening. (I did have it grounded) I worked the switch by hand a bunch of times and then it started working. Put it all together and it runs like a champ! Thanks for you help and your video.

  • @donyboy73 I did, it has clamps on both ends and is a tight fit. Still surges. I'm wondering why the pump doesn't pump more. I can blow though the fuel filter just fine. I think I'll replace it anyway.............

  • @donyboy73 It is on with the clamps. This JD hasn't been used very much. There are no oil/air leaks that I can see......

Am I correct in assuming the fuel filter should look full?
