Yes that is correct the Coast Guard is a part of the DHS. and during war time is apart of the DOD.

@cwood4ever If I understand the current situation correctly it's currently under Department of Homeland Security (made the switch after 9/11)

Coast Guard isn't under the department of Defense but under the department of transportation. When in a time of war it goes under the direction of the US Navy under the department of defense.

It is a little-known fact that those who drove the landing craft into Normandy were USCG personal. No CG, no free Europe. (not dimishing the roles of anyone else that partcipated in the D-day invasions, they are all HEROES)
