A very popular song in America, made by a Scottish band. It was period correct, soldiers heard it on Armed Forces Radio, and the refrain, and somber tone, was right for many young men who longed to just come home. Regretfully, many came home in coffins.

My brother in law served as a medic in country. He tried for years, when he got home, to deal with the horrific memories....nothing could erase or mute those images.....not alcohol, not drugs. He was awarded medals by the Vietnamese government, Silver and Bronze stars, two Purple Hearts and various other medals and awards. He died at the age of 59....but his life was taken from him back in Vietnam. Death was his only relief from the nightmares and horror. Rest brothers and sisters, rest ...

As important as it was (and not done) during and after the VietNam war, we must be supportive of and thankful for those brave men and women who give it all for our country. On this Memorial Day, more than ever, thank you for your service.

You ARE fortunate! My uncle joined the US Navy to beat the draft; but, was sent to the USS Intrepid; and, spent most of his enlistment off the coast of and around Vietnam - plus, he didn't meet his son until he was a year old. Strange how things end up.

I signed up for the navy to beat the draft, but backed out at the last minute because 7 years was too long. So I waited for the draft instead. I figured 2 years in Nam I'd either come back alive or in a body bag. My lottery numbers never came up. Either pure luck or divine intervention. I lost good friends in that conflict.

I remember watching a special on PBS about Charlie Company where the company or platoon refused an order to walk down a road. They told the Looie he was crazy and they would be sitting ducks. If I remember right they weren't charged with anything. It was a stupid order to begin with. Anyway the were laying around on a break and this song was playing on the radio. It made a real impression on me. I think of that show and the sad feeling I got while that song was playing every time I hear it now.
