'M' (for murder) is the story of a German Town which is stalked by a child serial murderer Hans Beckert, played by Peter Lorre. The police have been unable to come up with a lead in the case despite making their presence felt within the city's criminal community. They in turn are horrified at the continual interruption of their activities, which has intensified as a result of the murder investigation. They therefore decide to try to capture the murderer themselves enlisting the help of the entire underground world.

Caught between these two factions Beckert's demise is more than certain. The criminals are covering every area of the streets not already guarded by the city's busy bodies and vigilantes. The police continue to pursue him via more conventional means. As it becomes apparent that there is no escape for him, the question becomes who will get their hands on him first.
