This is really typical advice from a pro. I don't deny that this works with a 1911, but most people do NOT carry 1911's for concealed carry. Wouldn't it make more sense to gear a video toward people who do not carry 1911? Just a thought.

Doug's grip would certainly apply to other firearms as well whether it has a thumb safety or not, the basics of the grip are the same. On our channel we also have Charlie McNeese of Gunsight demonstrating the grip in almost the same way on a Sig P-229. The 229 does not have a thumb safety. Search Gunsite and Grip in the search tab here on YouTube to easily find the video.

Deburr it. Or you can purchase a safety that is deburred.

If you shoot enough you will develop a callus at the base of your thumb/web of your had. When that happens the safety (deburred or not) won't bother you.

A lot of people have trouble with a thumbs-forward grip, especially on Sigs. The thumb can rest on the slide stop preventing it from engaging the slide on the last round. While you might be able to shoot straight, not know that your pistol has run dry is a definite disadvantage. I agree with lamarama1, that alternative holds should be covered, although I would prefer that a single video address several options.

That's just one method of gripping a gun. I've never met anyone that could shoot a pistol better than I can but I don't go to shooting competitions. I just grew up with a real NEED for guns. When you have a rabid fox or packs of feral dogs at your door you learn to shoot early. I did go to a pistol range and start shooting once. I had 20 people standing around watching me shoot within 5 minutes. The best shooter there grabbed his gun and tried to match me. I've never met anyone that could...

Is there something I can do to stop the safety fron diggin ino my right hand? Your thumb appears higher than mine when I hold a 1911.
