If we seriously aim for sustainable community development we have to change our approach as dedicated and committed professionals. Technologies have to be contextualized so that they fit the local users context, culture and climate. They have to meet the local community's own identified needs. These needs have to be taken serious and have to be addressed in a holistic, long-term way. The "Family of 4", Elementary Indoor Lighting, a Pit Latrine, a Cooking and Heating Stove and Clean Drinking Water are often the main needs local communities identify as their most urgent needs. RIDS-Nepal, a non-profit NGO working in the high altitude north-western district of Humla in Nepal(www.rids-nepal.org) designed a new approach to development, by addressing these 4 needs together in a holistic community development project, called the "Family of 4". Not only are the major needs of the local people addressed actively, but synergetic benefits can be gained and long-term sustainability is much more likely.
