Video about Lake Superior Youth Symposium held at Michigan Technological University, Houghton, Michigan May 2001:

More than 400 students and teachers are registered from Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota, and Ontario.

More than sixty different presentations and field trips will be offered on a wide variety of topics, including Great Lakes history, geology, water quality, forest management, pollution threats, wildlife, student activism, photography, art and model student projects. More than one-third of the presentations and field trips are being presented by faculty, graduate students and alumni from Michigan Tech.

Other presenters include specialists from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Isle Royale National Park, Keweenaw National Historical Park, Michigan Sea Grant, the Great Lakes Aquarium, Trout Unlimited, National Wildlife Federation, Lake Superior Alliance, Mead Paper Division, Michigan Department of Natural Resources, International Paper, local teachers, and many more educators, artists, and writers.

The symposium is hosted by the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education and the Center for Science and Environmental Outreach at Michigan Tech. The symposium steering committee has received more than $41,000 in grants from Wege Foundation, Kennedy Fund, Mead Paper Division, International Paper, Keweenaw Community Foundation, and the Western UP Center for Science, Mathematics and Environmental Education. These funds are providing student and teacher travel and registration sponsorships, covering the cost of "guest presenters," paying for support staff (database designers, website maintenance, administrative assistants, etc), presentation supplies, printing and publicity, field trip transportation, T-shirts, and more.

The Keweenaw Community Foundation, International Paper, Mead Paper
Division, and the Western Upper Peninsula Center for Science, Mathematics, and Environmental Education have provided student and teacher registration sponsorships, in addition to many local school districts.
