These are pix and clips of Duckie, she's a Hooder Merganser. We knew that we would release her after she was old enough and that is why we didn't name her but she ended up being called Duckie. It was really sad to say goodbye to her when we released her and after a week had past I felt really bad because when she would come up out of the water to us she'd take a nap by us. I began to think that she wasn't sleeping when we were gone, always being "on watch" for other critters like wolves and coyotes. Later I decided that I'd bring her back home and my sister and I went out there, 10 minute plus walk south of our house. When we got there we saw there was another duck with her and so we kept out of sight awhile watching and then I snuck up low and slow. It ended up that she saw me and she came right up out of the water and over to me and then began to walk/led me down the path to home!! I could believe it. She walked half way home and I carried her the rest of the way. I kept her home two days but I knew that the pond was a better place for her and she must have decided the same as when we headed back to the pond she flew, first time I'd seen her really fly out of sight. She had been taken there in a box but sure enough she knew how to get there and when I finally got to the pond, there she was. I went often to see her. There are a few other ponds near and she did go to them with other ducks. The next year we had a long dry spell in the spring and the ponds had dried, sadly I've never seen her again.
Surprisingly, I believe in my heart that Duckie has graced my yard with her presence these past two day!!!! It's been two years ago that we released her. And now a pair of Hoodies in our back yard!!!!! They been around two days now. There is standing water everywhere now all around here, all over this area, there is no reason for a pair of wild Mergansers to come and hang out at the corner our yard. So many of you Part One viewers are missing out on some nice shots of Duckie in Part Two!!
