In October 2006 four intrepid aussie steam enthusiasts travelled half round the globe to join up with an English group going to Eritrea in Eastern Africa to sample the delights of the restored line between Asmara (the capital) and Massawa a (very hot and humid) port on the Red Sea. In part three we see more yard action followed by a short run out of Asmara and return with storm clouds gathering on the horizon.

  • If they can maintain steam traction easier, then they should stick with that.

However I have seen that they do not bother with using sanding gear when shunting.

In the UK a four-wheel locomotive is a yard shunter.

The locomotive here looks like a heavy shunter, but the massive boiler suggests otherwise.

What do they fire their locomotives with & do they have a indigenous fuel source?

  • @NJPurling They use coal imported from South Africa mainly they have no indigenous fuel source. as for sanding..............................!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

    thanks for watching

  • At the out of town station/passing loop where they did the photo runbys 3-4 mins you could see the excellent condition of the track. I hope Eritrean Railways can shift millions of tonnes over that track every year preferably using steam traction until they can electrify:-)

  • Woohoo! Nice steam machines!

  • Viva Eritrea!!!!!!!!
