At the end of an anomaly mission in the Rose Nebula you encounter this.

The vision is identical to what appears in ME1 but with the twist added to the Protheans in ME2

this vision, is of the reapers turning the protheans into teh collectors

thats why at :21 the collector has a lower body of a prothean.

The collecters were prothean, just not how you think, the tentacle guys were a lower species used by the protheans to hide themselves on illos because the reapers thought they had already killed off that species, the real protheans look exactly like the collecters, except with a mouth

Whatever is the meaning, that im sure it is the collector horrific mutation, this visions is always damn scary. Specially with the dark star on the other vision.

@PHresh94X In fact, it is shown and explained that Protheans are turned into Collectors from the Reapers, in Mass Effect 2, precisely in a Collector Ship.

@PHresh94X That's part of it, but it's also indicative of how their race was all but destroyed. The protheans were already a dead species when the few that were left were mutilated and transformed by harbinger.

@Ortriaphin At this point, only a fool would accept the idea of the Reapers' word for word. It sounds like they actually BELIEVE what they are doing is somehow elevating their victims' existence, so it may be they're also slaves. Reprogrammed/repurposed, perhaps, by a more insidious entity? ME4? Dun Dun Duuuunnnnnnnnnn.
