Scouting Spotlight At Outdoor Retailer 2011 | Wayne Gregory, Gregory Mountain Products

At Outdoor Retailer Winter Market 2011, Wayne Gregory, the company founder and original creator of the Gregory backpack, took some time to discuss the origins of his lifelong career. According to Gregory, a major supporter of the Boy Scouts of America, he "chose the camping merit badge as a way of life."

In this clip, Gregory explains how his Scoutmaster had Gregory and other Scouts make their own backpacks before heading off on a trek in the Sierra Nevada mountains. He knew he was on to something, Gregory said, when a fellow Scout liked his pack creation so much he offered to buy it.

Gregory also discusses the positive influence Scouting has had on his life, from building character to learning other skills that have contributed to his success as a businessman.

The BSA and representatives of The Summit Bechtel Scout Reserve traveled to OR Winter Market 2011 in Salt Lake City to present to outdoor industry leaders and insiders. The presentation included updates on the status and success of BSA programs, as well as the exciting developments at The Summit, the BSA's new permanent home for the national jamboree, and Scouting's newest national high adventure base.

The Summit, on 10,600 acres in West Virginia, will introduce America's youth to adventure and action sports in new and exciting ways. The base and adventure center will feature whitewater rafting and kayaking, rock climbing, mountain biking, zip lines and more.
