A short promotional video of the Stan's Cafe performance installation, Of All The People In All The World, in which rice is used to represent human statistics. Each grain represents one person and over a number of days the rice is weighted out to represent a host of statistics from populations of towns, to births and deaths, historical events, people who watch particular television shows and so on. • What a waste of rice. They could have used it to feed some homeless people. Oh well I suppose that's what they call art these days.

  • Hi Patches53

Just to reassure you that the rice we use in this show is never wasted. In the case of the show documented here the rice was collected by the supplier at the end, cleaned and returned to the food chain. Often the rice is donated to food charities at the end of a show or we reuse it for future shows. It is never thrown away.

  • all ppl in the world are....RICES?! O.o

  • Climate change is natural, its been happening since before there were humans, and you cant start it, stop it, or affect it in any meaningful way.

Idiots. You would think this generation was educated by brain dead hippie left overs from the 60's with more dead brain cells than live ones......

    Oh, right, it was....

  • goddamn some curry topping on that would just do the trick !

  • Three problems with that you're suggesting.

    1. Where's the entertainment value?

Writing a number on a piece of paper and placing it on the ground would be superbly boring.

    2. Actual figures ARE intangible, the rice is EVERYTHING but abstract.

We humans are more familiar with lower numbers than we are with higher ones. When I say two, you think of two physical things, the same does not apply to say, a million.

    3. Nothing wrong with using rice for artistic and educational purposes.

  • But that's the point - to make the numbers more real, less abstract. So you're able to actually see proportions and get a feeling for it. If you just want the numbers go to wikipedia or google it or whatever - there'd be no sense to make a show with just plain number tablets.

I think rice is a very cool idea cause it's small enough to be used for big numbers. And if they don't waste it, there's nothing left to critisize about it. Besides - name one art that doesn't "waste" anything...

  • See my reply to Stanscafe comment above

  • Instead of using rice they could have written on the pieces of paper the numbers of people going to 'die in the world' today, 'people being born in the world today', 'population of Australia', etc. etc. etc.

Show actual figures rather than use abstracts.

As I said previously "Oh well I suppose that's what they call art today".

  • This is so impressive. Hope this or a similar Exhibition will come to germany too.

Such an installation has the power to visualize relations of our world that normally are hidden behind abstract numbers

  • I don't think this is waisting of rice:

If there are only 1000 people seeing the relations of our world - e.g. the sooo small heap of rice that represents the very rich people, and the sooo enormous heap of rice that represents the people who don't have enough money for food - and if these people donate only a moderate amount of money, you could buy much more rice then you "waisted" in such an installation.
