I agree, that whole thing just didn't make sense. There was no reason for Mary to leave her baby behind in the first place. She could have easily just grabbed him before she went to get all the blind kids out. And also, Hester Sue made the fire spread when she opened the door to the basement- they always tell you NOT to open a door if it's hot or you see smoke...but I guess they didn't have fire safety education back then. :P
