the point of changing into your own team is for spys who use deadringer to get behind enemy lines without making it obvious. for example go as scout to charge the front lines and then go other teams sniper to then sneak up behind people and backstab them

the spy was probably posing as a fake target so the real sniper could get off a shot. happens alot me and a pal do it with dead ringer.
