Ibn Kathir said in al-Bidaayah wan-Nihaayah:

"And al-Ash'ari was a Mu'tazili but he repented from that [whilst] on top of the minbar (pulpit) in Basrah and then he publicized the scandals of the Mu'tazilah"

Sufis claim to follow Al-Ash'ari, but the man they claim to follow repented from his mistakes and adopted the correct aqidah by the hands of Ahmad Ibn Hanbal (rah).

In order to understand the Sufis of today, we need to be fair and make a distinction between the Ash'aris, The Ash'aris differ in some aspects, the later Ash'aris have more and greater errors then the early ones. The sufis of today are are not Ash'aris, they are more like the Jahmiyyah in Aqidah and the things they do today are more like Hinduism than Islam.

So Follow the Path of the Messenger of Allah (God) (saas) as was understood by the Sahaba and their students; the tabi'en and the atba tabi'een (i.e the Salaf us Salih) by thanking, praising and worshipping Allah alone without associating any partners, rivals, equals with Him and without attributing deficiency to Allah or attributing the attributes, powers of Allah to anyone of His creation.

This is the right of the One who created this whole creation as there is no one equal with Him. His creation is proof of His Powers, attributes and His attributes are a proof that He alone is to be praised and worshipped.

All praise and worhsip is due to Him alone. So beware of the gave worshippers, saint worshippers who call upon dead people who do not know nor hear their call.

And Allah says: If you invoke (or call upon) them, they hear not your call; and if (in case) they were to hear, they could not grant it (your request) to you. And on the Day of Resurrection, they will disown your worshipping them. And none can inform you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) like Him Who is the All-Knower (of everything). 35:14

So Beware and May Allah ta'ala bless you.

And We did not send any Messenger before you (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم) but We revealed to him (saying): La ilaha illa Ana [none has the right to be worshipped but I (Allah)], so worship Me (Alone and none else)." 21:25

Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "I possess no power over benefit or harm to myself except as Allah wills. If I had the knowledge of the Ghaib (Unseen), I should have secured for myself an abundance of wealth, and no evil should have touched me. I am but a warner, and a bringer of glad tidings unto people who believe." 7:188

Yet they have taken besides Him other gods who created nothing but are themselves created, and possess neither harm nor benefit for themselves, and possess no power (of causing) death, nor (of giving) life, nor of raising the dead. 25:3

And if Allah touches you with harm, none can remove it but He, and if He touches you with good, then He is Able to do all things. 6:17

And they worship besides Allah things that harm them not, nor profit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allah." Say: "Do you inform Allah of that which He knows not in the heavens and on the earth?" Glorified and Exalted is He above all that which they associate as partners (with Him)! 10:18

Say (O Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم): "I have no power over any harm or profit to myself except what Allah may will. For every Ummah (a community or a nation), there is a term appointed; when their term comes, neither can they delay it nor can they advance it an hour (or a moment)." 10:49

The Quran is the best argument as it is filled with Tawhid. So read it and undestand what the mission of the messengers of Allah was.
