@Hesternic actually no one is quite sure what G.I. stands for. some say it stands for Government Issue, while some say it means galvanized iron. though the real meaning has never been established, it is thought to have originated during WWI or WWII

"GI Joe" is an action figure doll, representing an American soldier. GI is short for "General Infantry", referring to foot soldiers. There's also comic books and cartoons based on these toys.
