Those who permit face chomping on their cattle certainly don't know or care much for their livestock, let alone teaching a dog to herd.

Good point and I have to agree with you there should be no indiscriminate face chomping. However, in order to stop forward movement of cattle, a dog must be able to go to the head to turn the cattle. Some cattle don't respect the dog and will literally run over them. A dog who is unwilling or too afraid to go to head is not worth having around cattle. Biting the nose is a tool and is only appropriate in certain situations. These dogs were bred to heel and to head as part of the total package.

You must be a rancher with a lot of experience with Australian Cattle dogs I gather. Or just soeone making statement with lack of knowledge about the breed and no understanding about controlling cattle with ACDs Im an Aussie and bet you are from the US. I have only had these dogs for about 40 years so I guess my imput or disagreement with your statement has no foundation ah?? Woof Woof

As Jeff185 said, controlling the nose is one thing but there are a group of people here in the US who encourage dogs to dig in and hang on for their own foolish amusement. This is not herding. If my dog can't control direction without tearing up my livestock, it's my failure as a trainer or an unintelligent dog. My opinion.

My famiyl just adopted a5 month old australian stumpy tailed cattle dog from the rspca and she has been lovely, no nipping, respectful of our cats and other animal and to think the people who bred her were going to shoot the entire litter :( only had her for one day and she already sits on command :)
