it doesn't ruin it for me-it's such a low note anyway that it's mixed up with lots of overtones etc. if it were in the middle register it may've been more critical.
Such is the energy and conviction of Richter's playing that i'm not overly troubled.

Agreed! Perfect renderings are usually boring. I'd add Schnabel to your list, too.

its a shame he accidentally hit a B at the end instead of an A...kinda ruins the resolution of the climax.

not for me it doesn't. many of my all time favourite performances by artists such as Richter, Gilels, Cortot, Gieseking etc have quite a few finger slips and yet are infinitely more satisfying than note-perfect and pedestrian recordings from many of today's leading pianists

yes, pianistic perfection allowing for directness of emotion - I think it is the fearless, risk taking nature of Richter's pianism that allows him to attain that ferocity of joy in the culmination, that sense of sheer fucking joy which is what this piece is all about for me!
