NICARAGUA: SUNSET OMETEPE COCIBOLCA LAKE

E' il più grande lago del Centro America ed uno dei più grandi al mondo con una superficie pari alla regione Umbria (8200 Kmq).Ha una lungheza di 177 Km e le sue acque si trovano 31 metri sopra il livello del mare. Nelle carte geografiche è usualmente denominato Gran Lago Nicaragua.
Il suo nome deriva dal nathuatl coalt-pol-can louogo del grande serpente, simbolo del dio Quetzalcoaltl fratello di Xolotl (che darà il nome al Xolotlan o Lago Managua)
Ricchissimo di fauna e flora tropicale, nelle sue acque un tempo si incontrava l'unica specie di squalo di acqua dolce ora estinto, oggi, dopo molti anni che non lo si avvista, si dice che vive solo nella acqua profonde nel pressi di Solentiname.
Il Cocibolca è collegato all'oceano Atlantico dal Rio San Juan navigabile per l'intero suo percorso e sul versante opposto le sue rive sono a soli 18 Km dall'oceano Pacifico. Sulle sue rive si affacciano le città di Granada, Rivas e San Carlos collegate da Ferry Boat.

It's the biggest lacustrine island in the world. It's placed inside Cocibolca lake and it's created by two big active volcanoes Conceptión 1610 mts high and Maderas 1394 mts high. Its surface is about 270 square kilometers and it has 35000 inhabitants approximately. The most part of Ometepe inhabitants work in farming

Its name derives from the Aztec language and it means Ome= two and Tepelth=hills, due to the mountains formed by the two volcanos. The volcanic activity, through the deposition of volcanic ash, has made the soil of the plains extremely fertile, permitting constant planting without fallowing. The island has probably been inhabited since 2000-2500 B.C.
