The toilet is draining anti-clockwise, not due to the Coriolis Force, but due to the design of the bowl. Australian toilets do not generally drain with a circular motion because of their markedly different design. For ABC891 Science in the Studio.

  • Well, the real extravagance is not the jets (which use very little water) but using a system that makes it just about impossible to have a dual flush to save water when only urine needs to be flushed. Australia saves many billions of litres of water a year through the use of dual-flush toilets --- very important with our dry climate.

  • You're absolutely right, the rotation is due to the rim jets. The vortex motion induced by the jets was patented as a means of helping to keep the bowl clean.
