Somebody challenged me to videotape myself playing brushes while scat singing the legendary sax solo by Lester Young on "Lady Be Good". And so I gave it a go. No fool, no fun .. right?

The original solo is from a historical recording dated October 1936 by Jones-Smith Inc. The band members were none less than Count Basie (p), Lester Young (ts), Carl Smith (tp), Walter Page (b) and Jo Jones (dr). Their wonderful version of this tune is to be found on Youtube - here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SeqwPX4T4E0&feature=related

I'm not exactly Ella Fitzgerald or Papa Jo Jones .. but hey, I tried. ;) Thanks for watching. More strange experiments from me on:

  • Superb.

    Beautiful singing and "dancing."

    Well done.

  • @jaschaheifetz

That's very kind of you. Thank you!!

  • Ha! sounds right to me, speaking as one of Sussex's great Air Tenor Sax players-as for the key, I dunno, pick a key, I'll sing in anyones flat. Envy the brushwork, by the way

  • @phaasch

Air tenor sax players are usually the best! :)) And thanks again. To be honest I recorded another version where I'm pitching a little better because it's in a higher key but the brushwork really sucked in that one, lol. And so my husband (a drummer!) told me to upload this version. Perhaps someday I'll get it all right. ;)

  • Cracking! loved this! and I thought I was the only person sad enough to memorise all 64 bars of Lesters solo!

  • @phaasch

    - hehe, thanks a lot. So did I get it right? ;) I haven't checked. It's in a different key than the original obviously.

  • Thanks for that. If the pitch sounds off you can always blame the acoustics. Anyway practice makes perfect, and youre in the right place for it- If the Old Man cant teach you, no- one can. Keep posting, hey?- Meantime I'll keep blowing air, while imagining I'm in a NYC recording studio somewhere around 1937. Quelle saddo!

  • GOT DAYYUM!

  • If this "challenge" from "somebody" was actually a bet, I'd say they owe you some money. Very, very well done.
