I've wanted to write a song about this particular period of history for a while now but often found my approach was wrong.

I've chosen to write the song based on a short story I wrote a few weeks ago about a young boy who has been evacuated during the war and has been forced to leave his parents.

The reference to 'heaven' in the chorus is symbolic, it represents his new home, which has all the components of being a perfect place to live yet with the fundamental flaw of simply not being home, he longs to be back with his mother and father. He is then forced to move from place to place to evade the danger which encroaches upon even the supposedly 'safe' areas where the children are evacuated to.

I hope you enjoy it.

Lyrics:

A little boy
Walking round in his dreams
Firefly street lamps
and chocolate streams

The old woman smiles
Watching you run fast
Seeing herself
Some eighty years past

Chorus;

But time doesn't
Fly in heaven
When your waiting
on you're family to call
You were taken away far too soon
In the wind and the rain
There was crying there was pain
Oh you couldn't understand
Why you boarded that train
That big black machine
Full of smoke full of steam
Snatched you away
In the winter of '39

He's a grown up now
At the age of five
Bomb blasts and sirens
Make sleep hard to find

So his dreams are now faded
Like the picture he never shows
Of a mother and father
That he barely knows

  • Thank you very much Tom for such a great comment. Indeed, it is a humbling thought to think that my grand parents and great grandparents were among the brave host who helped protect the liberty of all who live today, we owe a great debt. Thanks again, take care my friend;

    Duncan
