Plane Crash Tribute to flight 5055 air disaster

My respectful tribute to those who lost their lives aboard LOT Polish Airlines flight 5055 on 9th May 1987

(KATASTROFA SAMOLOTU TADEUSZ KOSCIUSZKO)

At 10:18 flight LO5055 took off from Warsaw runway 33 for a flight to New York-JFK. The aircraft headed for the Grudziadz(GRU VOR),which it passed at FL265, climbing to FL310. Two minutes later, at 10:41 the no.2 engine low pressure turbine shaft broke loose, followed by the failure of the turbine disc. Debris punctured the aft fuselage, causing a fire in the cargo hold. The elevator control system was severed and the no.1 engine had to be shut down. The flight crew immediately started an emergency descent to 4000m. After shutting down both no.1 and no.2 engine the crew mistakenly thought the fire was extinguished. They had decided to land at Modlin airport, but still unaware of the fire, changed to Warsaw-Okecie runway 33 becouse of better rescue equipment there. The flight started a left turn for runway 33 at 11:09am at an altitude of 1450m and an airspeed of 480km/h. The pilots lost control during the turn and the Il-62 crashed into a forest - 6 km from the runway...All of the 183 people aboard died. The cause of the accident was the destruction of engine no.2 resulting in disconnection of the longitudinal control system from the control column, cabin depressurisation, damage to the electronic system and fire.

@steamgeezer Both of you have right.

It was actually IL62M made in Soviet Union but idea, project of a british VC-10 plane has been stolen by russian engineers. Thats why both planes looks identical. Unfortunately IL62 had worse security systems. For example no doubled mechanical and electrical systems. Explosion of second engine cut electrical and fuel wires so pilots had very limited control of a plane.

Wiecie...ten dzień pamiętam jak nigdy.

W domu bawiłem się taką ruską kopią LEGO (model Tu 154)....

"Latałem" sobie po kuchni....i nagle ten samolot wypadł mi z ręki.....

w 10 min później w radiu usłyszałem, że rozbił się polski samolot....

Do dziś mnie to prześladuje....

Kiedy mi z rąk leciało "ruskie LEGO"...w rzeczywistości zginęło 183 osoby.....
