  • If you haven't noticed, the rock, blues, jazz, R&B,and gospel Hammond playing is very much based around playing the verse/chorus/bridge, but then breaking up melodies and going into improvisation. Sure many players repeat a practiced solo, but the general trend is to play freely. That's cool I've played plenty of Hammond in this manner, but maybe this documentary shouldn't have insinuated that before Jimmy Smith nothing else really mattered. Jesse Crawford sounds awesome on a Hammond organ!

  • Ethel Smith and Jimmy Smith!!! Two Hammond Organ Legends!!!

  • Ethel Smith crushing it!

  • The Hammond X66 was the first organ combining two technologies: tone wheel generators and solid state transistor electronic oscillators. Unforgettable and unique organ.

  • Many organ companies in the early 1980's went out of business, due to the new technoloy of Lowrey's Orchestration Plus introduced on the world's famous Lowrey MX-1. The only organ company that has not been bought out or gone under is Allen Organ Company. The tone wheel organ really was the first synthesizer, and was not really technically an organ.

  • Does anyone know what documentary this is from? Need to reference it! :P Cheers

  • Fascinating video, thanks for uploading! I had no idea about all the other things that Mr. Hammond invented!

  • One of the best Hammond organists was Buddy Cole who released several fantastic recordings on the Warner Bros. label. He was also a wonderful theater organist. Radio City Music Hall's Chief Organist Dick Leibert also made an impressive Hammond recording for Westminster.

  • I like Harvey's playing best. The popular standards of the 1930's sound so nice on a Hammond tone wheel organ. It all goes back to Ethel Smith!

  • Quite interesting, how Hammond organs begun
