The prayers and devotion to the Sacred Heart Of Jesus appears to have started about the year 1672. Our Lord Jesus appeared to blessed Saint Margaret Mary Alacoque, a Visitation nun, in France. This devotion is based entirely on the symbolism of the wound of the Heart. Since the Heart of Jesus appears to us as the sensible sign of His love, the visible wound in the Heart will naturally recall the invisible wound of this love.
