Here's a little improv I did today (8/27) on the rather, um, **large** High Spirits Contrabass flute in F#. Despite its size, it is relatively easy to play, has a super smooth voice, and gets the notes in the higher octave rather well for such a large flute. Enjoy!

  • You play beautifully by the way... ran out of characters in my other comment on the A series. I love your F in this video! I first got into Native American flutes in the quest to make one sounding the H.S. Condor E. I've never gotten there because I've come to like the higher notes so much (as well). But your F has got me wanting to go back to the drawing board. Thanks for sharing!

  • @SpiderWingz You're most welcome, sir! Thanks for commenting. Native American-style flutes have become a passion for not only me but also LOTS of folks around the world. I get comments from all over the U.S. as well as Sweden, Germany, France, the UK, Spain, Poland, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Japan, Korea, India, Sri Lanka, Australia, Hong Kong, ... It's a sound that resonates around the world! Good luck with your experiments making these beautiful instruments. More videos are on the way...

  • how did you do that at 1:07? I can't reproduce that..

  • If you mean the note bend at the end of the phrase, you play a note and then roll your finger off the hole so that it gradually opens up and slides up to the next note. If, on the other hand, you're referring to the actual ability to play that particular note in the higher octave, then it's really not me - it's the flute itself. Some contrabass flutes will produce notes in the second octave, but many will not. Each flute is different, so... roll your dice! Hope this helps. Peace ~ Bruce

  • Oh yes, and if you want to play in the upper registers, you need to push more air through the mouthpiece (read: blow harder!)
