Harmony 1105-H Here's a new snappy Annette tune from my 78 collection, Annette Hanshaw sings another "Talkie Hit " from "Be Yourself". Be sure and play her other song from this talkie I have posted last week, "When a Woman Loves A Man", both tunes recorded the same day, 1-30-30. Rare film of the Phil Spitalny Orchestra and the Goldwym Girls hilight this post, with color magazine illustrations from the 20s Ladies Home Journal adding period kitchen charm. I went animation crazy on this one so expect some amusing images. Enjoy this new version by Phil Spitalnys band, under pseudonym "Hotel Pennsylvania Music".

Phil Spitalny expert Prozoot says that Harmony records by Hotel Pennsylvania Music are by Phil Spitalnys band at this time. The Harmony record label says Gay Ellis with Hotel Pennsylvania Music (a pseudonym). The violin solo behind her vocal sounds like Joe Venuti to me! There is aiso a guitar, who may be Eddie Lang!
This video has been uploaded by all jazz.com asserting that it is a record that never was! ... a blend mix of 2 different records! I want to assure all viewers this is just one rare Harmony label 78! It's not even listed at redhot jazz site!

New Info: This song was written in part by Billy Rose, who was married then to Ziegfeld's jewish comedian Fanny Brice, and promoted her in the new talkies, in her first United Artists sound film, "Be Yourself". She sang this song to Robert Armstrong (you know him from King Kong) in the film. Fanny had previously made an early Vitaphone Warner Brothers talkie called "My Man", that is lost. Some sound track records have turned up, but the film is dust in the can.

  • This is Annettes birthday, October 18th! Happy Birthday Annette!! Thank you fans for making this the version chosen on 20sjazz .com site!!

  • Amazing.... couldn't take my eyes off it. I loved the kitchen at dawn lighting. And I wonder where you collected all those images.

  • @otisourcat Thank you! Hope you watch it many times & enjoy it as much! 1920s kitchens are charming places I tried to capture here. Plus the zig zag motif of French Art Deco, then in vogue. Thanks for noticing the dawning sequence. I started with a color 20s mag ad. I'm glad you are pleased with the finished illusion! Annette recorded many versions of this song, you should hear them all & notice how different they are! You can buy 20s mag ads like these at antique paper shows for $5 bucks :-)

  • Excellent - great fun!

  • @bing855 glad you enjoyed it! Your channel is a must see!! Your Norconian resort of 1929 in California is a marvel of artistry and beautiful American design! It must be saved! Your channel is a wonderful tribute! It is another Hearst castle!! Thanks for watching!! I appreciare what you are doing!

  • SOOOOOOOOO MACHOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

  • @sesresu Thank you for being very observant~ I put all the information that was on the 78 label in the video , and Fannys name was not on it! Sorry! Thanks for the extra info. All the popular singers of the era and dance bands recorded the hit songs that were first heard on Americas movie screens in 1929 and years after. Annette recorded alot of these! Unlike todays music which is sung/owned by the one artist and nobody else does it! It's fun to find many different versions of songs on 78s!

  • Forgive me if that sounded pompous - and if I got it wrong. I believe it was Fanny Brice in the movie - Be Yourself.

  • It wouldn't have hurt this charming, funny and delicious video you created or have been a slight to Annette to mention that this was Fanny Brice's song, now would it? I will be looking for other videos by you. What a treat!

  • This is super cute! :) Well done!
