H1N1 swine flu and other viruses are believed to spread when a person has contact with a person infected with the virus or a surface with the virus on it. According to the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), you can reduce your risk of contracting swine flu and other viruses by washing your hands thoroughly and correctly. In this video, Becky Kuhn, M.D. demonstrates the correct, CDC-recommended handwashing technique that will clean your hands most thoroughly and reduce your risk of contracting swine flu and other viruses as much as possible. Becky Kuhn, M.D. explains why it's important to wash your hands to avoid contracting or transmitting diseases. She explains and demonstrates the correct techniques for washing hands using soap. This video is relevant for anyone who wants to improve their hygiene and avoid illness and is especially important for people who have weakened immune systems (such as people with HIV or clinical AIDS) or who are caregivers for those with weakened immune systems. This video includes recommendations for people living in developing countries where soap, warm water, and handrubs may not be readily available; a separate video has recommendations for developed countries. • Good video but what a waste of water!!! If you have to wash your hands for at least 20 seconds shouldn't that include turning off the tap at the start (with your elbow perhaps)?!?

  • This video follows current best practice recommendations, and yes, it uses more water than not following the recommendations. The handle is contaminated by the unclean hands of others, so you don't want to touch it with your hands after washing. Few are willing or able to turn off their tap with the elbow & then turn it back on with the elbow, but if you are & are willing to run a (presumably low) risk of elbow-to-hand contamination to save water, you're free to do so!

  • If You Touch raw Chicken And You Wash your Hnds With hot Water And Soap Throughlory Does That make your hands free from germs?

  • Not "free from germs" or "100 percent clean." Different cleaning techniques achieve different degrees of cleanliness. Google "Hand Hygiene in Healthcare Settings Core". This will bring up PowerPoint slides with a graph showing how clean hands are after hand washing and use of alcohol hand rubs.
