3 mins will be ideal at sea level, and with every 1000 ft you climb add 1 min as a rough guide line, even with basic filtration eg a T shirt this method has worked for me since 1981, be safe and dont take chances.

Hi mike. Thanks for the video.
I noticed that you used your crusader cup to top up the millbank with unfiltered water and to boil the filtered water. Is there an issue there? Could some harmful material stay on the cup and be ingested do you think? Or doesn't it matter that much.
Cheers

@ilikebeertoo i put the metal cup over the flame first then fill it with water and boil it, as the outside may have contaminants on it.

@wall2rockclimber so you used a separate mug to add water to the filter bag. Or does the mug and water all sterillie when on the cooker

this is such a classic
some are using a Filter quality bag from brewer supply store and get true filter grade bags made to size you would like and be .1 or .2 micron filter. I would only put the ouside in the water source and scoop out of the clean inside for real hygenic water.
Good vid as always Mike, got a question for you. In my local woods there is a few large (12mx12m) pools, the water looks stagnent, I mean you can see some surface scum, not a lot just a thin layer, but ten meters to the left there is a tiny stream that goes on a while. Now could I filter that water through my millbank bag, boil it or purify it then drink it? Is stagnent okay basically?

never touch stagnant water mate, always use free flowing water. there are far too many bad things in stagnant water to prevent getting to you and making you ill. there are serious consequences to drinking unsafe water.
