A Mouse robot is equipped with an infrared (IR) transistor attached to rotating turret. The robot is programmed to find and move toward a flame. It can see the flame due to the fire's large IR signature.
Robodyssey Systems manufactures the Mouse robot, RAMB motherboard, turret head, and IR sensor you see here. The robot's brain is NetMedia's BX-24 microcontroller, which is programmed using the BasicX language. I am the author of the world's only BasicX textbook; if you are interested in learning how to program your own robot, see my website at www.basicxandrobotics.com.
How would I be able to create something similar to this. I'm trying to have something small on the edge of a pot so that when there are flames it can detect it. Help!

What do you need? A flame sensor is very easy to make (IR phototransistor and a resistor -- about 75 cents). You can make a simple fire alarm that would beep when it detected a fire out of the flame sensor and transistor. If you wanted a more intelligent sensor, you could connect it to a microcontroller (like I show in my video). I use the BX-24. It could turn on an extinguisher, call your cell phone, or whatever. Do you need a robot, too?
