  • Thanks. This helps so much. I also grew up with classical and my jazz teacher wants me to solo at a festival. Thankyou!

  • You're welcome! Good luck at the festival!

  • The blues scale is overrated and is not a terribly good device for improvisation. It is not actually a scale, just a collection of notes. It leaves out some nice notes like the the 3rd and the 6th.

  • Thank you again

  • Hi do you have any cool pieces of jazz music that would be good for a jazz festival? We were thinking that the piano could start up with a solo and then bring in the horn section and build a whole song around it. You seem to be a person who knows what they are talking about so I would appreciate any advice. Thankyou

  • You're welcome! Good luck with the solo. You might start with a basic riff (e.g. F Ab Eb F) -- then some space, then repeat the riff 2 more times. Then the 3rd time make the riff different. :-) Happy improving!
