  • The starboard tack boat is mine... But I wasn't on board! The insurance company of teh other vessel coughed up... Wish we'd had this footage when making the claim!!! Thanks for the footage!

  • I called the Royal Western Yacht club to see if anybody wanted the video but they never got back to me.

    Glad every body was O.K.

  • I was filming from the R.F.A. ship. I hope all your crew are o.k.

  • Two boats really in the wrong, but especially in the center... should have dropped back evasively, but if it weren't there the other port boat would have been on a collision course too... Moreover, starboard was in the right to stand-on, but really should have made a last minute maneuver. Shame on all of them.... That's as long as your UK rules are the same as the US... or is it backward, like driving? ;)

  • Cheers for the comment Christopher.

One thing I do know that is backward is the iala buoyage system in the States . . it's the wrong way around to us!!

We have Iala A That is when you come into a port red is left and green on the right. This system is used Worldwide except in the Americas. When entering a port you guys have Green to port.

    Happy sailing,

    Barry.

  • That's called 'stand on' not right of way. If the port boat doesn't give way the starboard must and if you have the opportunity to but don't the insurance company won't pay out. You simply can't ram a port boat when you could have avoid and say afterwards 'starboard' as if justifies it. Both boats are obliged to avoid a crash.

An example is the port boat may have problems so be unable to tack. The starboard boat is obliged to avoid a crash if able to do so if the port boat doesn't.

  • wtf they had plenty of time to change course

  • Rule 14 fail.

  • OOOF LOL

  • ah - racers = stupid

  • The guy on the right had preference. The guy on the left is wrong. What a colision, poor nice yachts.

  • Now....its Miller time

  • .. Failboat

  • These boats are racing, so Racing Rules of sailing apply. Rule 10

"When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of

    a starboard-tack boat."

And the preface to this section says,

"A boat has right of way when another boat is required to keep clear

    of her"

    Rule 14

"A boat shall avoid contact with another boat if reasonably possible. However, a right-of-way boat need not act to avoid contact until it is clear that the other boat is not keeping clear"

  • Look at rule 10..you might be a bit surprised

"When boats are on opposite tacks, a port-tack boat shall keep clear of a starboard-tack boat."

  • what about "port tack boat keep clear"????
