The heifers were probably watching because it's likely that someone brings them hay in the winter. They were hoping you were the "meals on wheels". : )
The house looks like it was built pre-1910, based partly on exterior appearance but, more specifically, on the interior 4-panel door details. It might be much older. Unusual that it still had a wood-fired kitchen range in use when it was abandoned.
