Preserved 1957 Leyland OPD2 R788 visits Conyngham Road Garage.

R788 is one of the best known preserved Irish buses around today. Since being withdrawn from active service in 1977 it has been in many Irish films and has even travelled abroad to rally in the UK. It has been on an Irish stamp and on the cover of a Dublin Bus Timetable. It was fully restored by Jimmy Conroy of Artane before being owned by it's current owner, Gary Manahan.

It entered service in Summerhill in January 1958 and into Ringsend in 1959. It operated on route 21 and was green until 1966 when it was seen in a publicity shot for D1 taken in Inchicore.

In September 1967 it transferred to Waterford along with R711 and 741 to replace earlier Rs.

It was the last standard R in service and was withdrawn in August 1977.

R788 is 50 years old and still going strong.

  • the auld routemasters were great, back in the 70s we would lash the poor conductor out of it with snowballs when the bus would stop at the lights at summerhill across from the sunset pub,He would leg it inside, jasus it takes yeh back, thanks.

  • Routemasters never operated in Dublin. It was the Rs/RAs which were Leyland that operated in large numbers here.

  • Very impressed with the camera work and editing too.

  • My route was the 46A (Dublin-Dun Laoghaire), but they later added the 58, from Rochestown Avenue to Dun Laoghaire. For some reason the 58 was always a bocketty oul bus like in this clip, whereas the Fortier was a modern one with the accordion doors and everything.

  • Hey, thats my surname!

  • Well composed piece.

  • who did the camera work i'm impressed .
