The Yamabushi began in Japan as isolated clusters of mountain hermits, who followed the path towards spiritual, mystical, and supernatural powers through asceticism.

These mountain mystics came to be renowned for their magical abilities and occult knowledge, and were sought out as healers, mediums, or shamans.

In the 8th century Yamabushi were attributed to the Shingon Sect of Buddhism, which was known for its openness towards regional belief systems.

Some people have observed the similarities between the Yamabushi and Jewish traditions.
