We just rented an apartment on the river right inbetween a Navy base and a shipbuilder - so I was able to catch this beast as it went by.

  • That is the submarine my son is on. :) Thank you for sharing this.

  • your very welcome, I will try to share more. I also have some images on Flickr, just do a people search for pond817 and you will find me

  • Is this in Groton, CT? IT is awesome to watch the submarines come in.

  • Yes, This was taken in Groton, CT - Submarine Capital of the world! I missed a big one that came in yesterday, aparently came in from service - my wife called me about it at work - I do have another video I will try to get up this weekend - alot cleaner than this one - brighter day.

  • I checked with a friend and you are correct, they are running the diesel engine, I plan to upload more videos as I catch them since they go right by our apartment on a regular basis, being smack dab inbetween a sub base and the construction facility. I think they are truely a magnificent sight!

  • I remember the first time I saw a sub, it was sitting at the pier and I was struggling to see it from less than 100 yards away. I didn't realize then how low they sit in the water and with all the surrounding support equipment it was almost camouflaged.

  • Yeah, deadsticking. Moving from EB to SUBASE.

  • So, deadsticking?

  • It's smoke from the diesel engine exhaust. That sub is not underway on its' own power. Generally, the fuel rack on the two subs I was on cut off once 6 inches of mercury was being pulled. That's great and grand but, it still made you squint if it happened. That sub is running on what's called "reduced electrical". It's probably pretty warm down inside and I recognize the landscape. They're taking her from State Pier to the SubBase.

  • My dads friend was a submarine captain of the USS Dallas up in Groton.

  • A little water runs throught with the diesel exhaust so on a cold day the water mist would look like steam.

  • Looks like smoke from the snorkel. The snorkel allows air to be drawn in to the emergency diesel and smoke to exit. The snorkel can raise and lower just like periscopes and antennas. The diesel provides electrical power while the reactor is cold. I saw a lot of running snorkels inmy day. AS-33 in Rota, Spain.

  • Yes that is doing what is known as a cold move, cold as in the nuclear reactor is not turned on and they are using the Diesels, the smoke is from the Diesel Exhaust mast i think

  • Yeah that's the diesel. If you're near a shipyard it was probably being moved from the yards to base. The thing on top of the sail is called "the racetrack" it's not really a mod, it just gives people more room to stand around while the boat is in port.
