The Battle of Cedar Mountain (also known as Slaughters Mountain, but I changed that to Slaughters hill to fit the song) was fought on August 9, 1862. Confederate general Robert E. Lee ordered Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson to defend Gordonsville from Union general John Pope and his newly formed Army of Virginia. When Jackson saw that a single Union corps, under Nathaniel P. Banks, was isolated at Cedar Run south of Culpeper, he attacked. The commander of the Stonewall Brigade was killed in the initial fighting, and Confederate victory looked far from certain when Jackson personally rallied his troops. A countercharge by Confederate general A. P. Hill won the day, although on August 11, Jackson withdrew in the direction of Orange.

The character Cutler Johnson is a result of my imagination, and there obviously never existed a Cutler bayonet, they mainly used Springfields or Enfields.

Calomel was a mercury-based medicine favored by both Union and Confederate doctors during the Civil War. Calomel was taken internally and used to treat most anything from diarrhea to amputation and bullet wounds, but mainly as a laxative and disinfectant, as well as in the treatment of syphilis.

Hardtack is the most famous American Civil War staple food. Hard as a rock, this cracker was issued, and stored for marching. It was also affectionately known by the men as "angel cakes, teeth dullers or ammo reserves".

'Cept for the ugly bearded guy in the beginning and the end, all pictures are connected to the Battle of Cedar Mountain. Cheers!
