**If this sound seems exotic (or just strange), it's because I'm playing on gut strings (sheep intestine), and performing with almost no vibrato, in an attempt to create a sound that Biber might have heard himself.*** Recorded on a baroque violin made by Daniel Larson, baroque bow by Andrew Dipper, sheep intestine strings by Gamut. Tuned to A=415. Edition by Johan Tufvesson. Ornamentation is my own.
Heinrich Ignaz Franz von Biber, 1644-1704.

  • I'm working on this piece right now, much more satisfying to be able to play it, thanks for sharing.

  • Good luck with the Biber, Bshow1212!

  • This is my favorite performance of this song. You made this song more enjoyable for me. Thank you.

  • Hi Ramboozler. Thanks, I appreciate that very much! Check out Andrew Manze and Reinhard Goebel playing it. They are fantastic.

  • Wow. Love those first four notes! I could listen to just that over and over again (without the variations). They're just so beautiful in a rich, mournful way. Love the harmonics in them and the way they taper off.

The whole song is, great, though. I love how the rest of it pulls you back to those same four notes, too.

  • Ah, thank you so much, Sarah. Very kind comments!

  • What a truly lovely piece. I appreciate your sharing your research in regards to the Baroque. During our last rehearsal, our orchestra conductor had us play without vibrato for our Baroque piece. That simple change has created a totally different sound, which I am sure is true for this piece.

  • Excelent playing professotV and I like no vibrato and gut strings very much. Its sounds more mistical this way. By the way, can you tell us which peaces was Bach influenced by when he wrote his partitas and sonatas for solo violin?

  • Arguably... The most beautiful music ever performed...

  • Ahhh..very beautiful!!

  • Mysterious.. is one word of describing this piece and its performance!

  • This is a good example of woody tone. What I call a woody tone anyway. It`s amazingly beautiful. Fritz Kreisler would have been proud of you.
