Bascom Lamar Lunsford (1882-1973), the "Minstrel of Appalachia," was a folklorist, attorney, and old-time musician from Mars County, North Carolina. He wrote these words to a traditional American fiddle tune, "Booth Shot Lincoln." A great collector of regional folk music, it was said that he would "cross hell on a rotten rail for a good song."
