It was great how they tried to help get the whale back to the sea, but it's a big shame the whale died :'(

There's an exhibition about the whale happening now until the 2nd May at the NHM at Tring : can't seem to post a link here so just Google 'nhm tring thames' and it's the top hit.

did it die in the end i cant remeber???

@ninjakid09 No...No, it doesn't. That whale came up the Thames because it was already swimming in cold water and couldn't tell the difference. Sharks very rarely swim into cold waters as their blood temperature is determined by the temperature of the water around them. If that drops below a certain level, they will not go back to that area. Also, the shark would die faster than the whale would. They can't breathe FRESH water. -_- Only bull sharks can do so.

hmm a whale...so tht means sharks 2 can come

theres going to be a few more whales in london when the U.S supporters arrive for the 2012 olmpics.
no but seriously, there will be more whales when the north sea smashes through the thames barrier.
The distance from the Thames at London and the estuary into the Channel is miles. There was no way that whale would have made it the way they did it.

Hi, thanks for your comment. I would urge you to read the full report which can be found on the web site : thameswhale(dot)info as this may help to answer any queries you may have. The team under the advice of the very experienced vets decided to get the whale on to the barge and at least get going to give the whale some chance. If they had not got moving the barge would have become 'locked' between the bridges over the Thames by 3pm as the tide came in, giving the whale a 0% survival chance.

Based on the logistics available (barge being the only vessel on the day capable of lifting and carrying the whale) the team did all they could. There have been many suggestions of ways to have carried out the rescue eg; transport the whale in tank of water towed behind the barge - what tank ?, use a helicopter to lift it .. again which helicopter/no control over whale in air/what happens if mechanical problem with helio - dump whale ?. If you have any further queries, please send me a message.
