A YouTube tribute to Angela Aki's "Tegami (Letter - Greetings to a 15 Year Old)" "手紙 (Haikei Jūgo no Kimi e)" アンジェラ・アキ
A mashup remix version of the popular song that's become the Japanese equivalent of Vitamin C's "Graduation Song (Friends Forever)." It features individuals, school choruses and others doing their renditions of the song that's become a graduation anthem at schools throughout Japan.
What really struck me about "Tegami" was how beloved it has become in Japan and, now, abroad. It possesses a simple yet memorable melody (including some terrific "hooks"), and inspirational lyrics with a positive message. The Japanese are a sentimental people, and that is clearly illustrated in the emotional and heartfelt response this song manages to evoke, particularly among adolscents facing an uncertain future. High school graduation is an all-important milestone in Japan and treated with a great deal of solemnity and reverence, more so than in the States. And this song is so well suited to the occasion.
Personally, the best part is the "Keep on believing!" bridge in the middle when everyone rocks out. Love that one school band concert clip where they're all jumping and clapping.
Angela Aki originally wrote "Tegami" at the request of NHK, the national public broadcasting network, as a compulsory song in the 75th NHK National School Music Contest in 2008. Aki's father is Japanese and her mother is Italian-American. The bilingual singer-songwriter is a graduate of George Washington University in Washington, D.C.
The difficulty with these kinds of mashups is adjusting not only the pitch (key) but tempo of the various versions and in syncing each track into a seamless production. Sometimes the musical key is so far off from the primary track key that it's useless and has to be tossed. As always, I relied on my trusty Magix Music Maker 12 for multi-track audio editing, EFX and rendering. With as many elements (clips) as there typically are in a mashup like this, I try to steer clear of using complex video effects and edits. Simple fades and dissolves usually suffice, in which case any basic video editing program can do the trick.
TRANSLATED LYRICS:
Dear you,
Who's reading this letter
Where are you and what are you doing now?
For me who's 15 years old
There are seeds of worries I can't tell anyone
If it's a letter addressed to my future self,
Surely I can confide truly to myself
Now, it seems that I'm about to be defeated and cry
For someone who's seemingly about to disappear
Whose words should I believe in?
This one-and-only heart has been broken so many times
In the midst of this pain, I live the present
Dear you,
Thank you
I have something to tell the 15-year-old you
If you continue asking what and where you should be going
You'll be able to see the answer
The rough seas of youth may be tough
But row your boat of dreams on
Towards the shores of tomorrow
Now, please don't be defeated and please don't shed a tear
During these times when you're seemingly about to disappear
Just believe in your own voice
For me as an adult, there are sleepless nights when I'm hurt
But I'm living the bittersweet present
There's meaning to everything in life
So build your dreams without fear
Keep on believing
Seems like I'm about to be defeated and cry
For someone who's seemingly about to disappear
Whose words should I believe in?
Please don't be defeated and please don't shed a tear
During these times when you're seemingly about to disappear
Just believe in your own voice
No matter era we're in
There's no running away from sorrow
So show your smile, and go on living the present
Go on living the present
Dear you,
Who's reading this letter
I wish you happiness...
