Hardware failures are fairly rare anymore due to robust hardware .While unplugging lots of cables appears to be a pain and it would be, we rarely replace hardware any more. With redundancy at the OS level, taking a server (or more) down normally has no production impact. With ~ 60k servers, cable management to optimize airflow has a big utility impact globally for us. So what happens if you have to replace the 4506 fan tray? Do you unplug 125 cables?

brilliant gentlemen. I have always questioned by boys when it came to patch panels between users and switches... intel does not use them! wow.

Looks like cisco, I recognise a few of the boxes.
For ethernet, theres basically blue boxen (Cisco big cats) and black boxen (founcade). While I am sure there are others, I doubt you'd find them in serious use.
The dell switches are good for throwing out and not a lot else.
