@MrJeangrey1 Same reason Brennan moves his hands in a certain way, Jesse breathes in or out, or Shalimar closes her eyes a moment before opening them up to reveal the yellow feral eyes.
It could be argued from a canon standpoint that these are rotes the mutants used to activate and control their powers, but the heart of the matter was that they were visual cues for the CGI artists and other actors so they knew when powers were being used, and to superimpose/react to the special effects.
