A short-horned grasshopper (a.k.a. brachypterous grasshopper; Parapodisma sp.) in the family Acrididae, was found dead clinging to a pampas-grass (Miscanthus sinensis). It was killed by the locust fungus (Entomophaga grylli?) which was one of the entomopathogenic fungi but harmless to humans. The deadly fungus is known to make the infected host climb higher before death somehow in order to enhance the propagation of spores (parasitic mind control). They may be useful in the biological pest control against grasshoppers and locusts. Recorded on mid-July 2008 in Japan.

  • I kept crickets for my pet spiders, and they started dying, i think they caught this damn fungus. Their bellys simply dripped down like snots

  • wow, that is bloody interesting!!

do u have any vids or pics of the infected crickets?

did ur pet spiders eat them?

if so, did they get sick, too?

im sorry about my late response.

  • To be honest, i dont know really whats happening to those crickets, at the first sight it looks like they are rotting inside...

  • appreciate the interesting info.

  • The Grass hopper is HUGE!!

  • hi, thx 4 watching.

i think this species is middle-sized (25-30mm in body length) among japanese grasshoppers.

it has vestigial short wings even in adult.
