"We must make the investments in clean energy sources that will curb our dependence on fossil fuels and make America energy independent." This quote from The White House Issues webpage is a call to the nation to become energy independent. The 2008 US Department of Energy Annual Report (2008) estimates that about 23% of the nations energy comes from coal (some of which is extracted cheaply by the destructive method of mountaintop removal). This video is a cover of a Daniel Martin Moore song that highlights the impact of mountaintop removal on citizens living in towns near coal reserves. The video includes a collection of pictures and videos showing the effects of coal extraction cities, mountains, and communities.
The simplicity of the recording of my singing and the amount of face time in the video creates a personal tone and establishes my endorsement of this particular cause. As the video progresses, a variety of clips intensify the lyrics and highlight the tragic effects of mountaintop removal. Finally, the remixing of footage during the bridge of the song makes a connection between everyday energy consumption and the necessity of coal extraction.
This particular scene represents the added underlying argument of my video: We, as people consuming energy everyday, are responsible for the extraction of coal around the country. The purpose of this argument is to complement the argument of the song and convince viewers to reduce their energy use (a somewhat ironic message given that it took quite a bit of energy to record, produce, and publish this video).
